I broke up with the guy I thought I was going to marry

Nickname/Alias: Leah

Subject: Season of wait

Message: I recently broke up with my boyfriend who I thought I was going to marry. One of my greatest fears in life is being alone. However, I know that I need to work on getting that comfort and fulfillment from God. I’ve read that seasons of singleness are to be enjoyed, but I just don’t know how? What can I do? Or what advise can you give me because of course my heart is broken but I don’t want to be like this forever.

Response:

Dear Leah,

I am so, so sorry for what you’re going through. Heart break is one of the hardest things we face, especially in youth. Here are a few things I’ve learned along the way about recovering from a break up:

  1. The hurt doesn’t last forever. You have to give yourself time to grieve, but you also have to take care of yourself. Make sure you fill your time with positive things: exercise, spending time with friends, volunteering, etc. so that you don’t feel lonely.

  2. Remind yourself why you ended the relationship. When we are feeling broken, it’s easy to forget the reasons and want to go back. You obviously had good reasons for knowing this wasn’t the relationship God wanted for you. He will comfort you if you trust in His plans for you.

  3. Commit to being single for awhile. Don’t rush into another relationship. Re-focus on what makes you you—it’s important to feel content and whole by yourself before dating someone else again.

  4. Read some good books on Christian dating and start making lists of what’s really important to you in life and in a relationship—and never settle for less!
