They Don't Expect Much From Me
Cyndi Woods
For much of my life I’ve felt as though people didn’t really expect much from me because, after all… what can one expect from a blind person? No one seemed to expect me to do chores, get a job, help out with projects, etc. But this can leave a person with a disability feeling like they have little to no purpose.
Even as an adult, if I am unable to do something because of a scheduling conflict, people tend to assume that it’s simply to complicated for me to do, therefore they don’t ask much of me in the future. I think people don’t want to make me feel inadequate or guilty if I can’t help. I understand their concerns and I don’t fault people for trying to be sensitive to my feelings. However, it goes back to feeling like I have no purpose. We all need purpose in our lives. We all need to belong and make a difference.
If you have a disability or are caring for someone who does or love someone who does, let me just assure you that God has a plan. Jesus ministered to people with disabilities all throughout His ministry. He taught His disciples and all those who were listening, by healing or ministering to those who had special needs. He had a special purpose for and a tender heart towards those who were called to the difficult task of carrying a disability.
God’s ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts higher than our thoughts, so we may not understand why He has called certain people to be allowed to shoulder a disability. But make no mistake… He only calls the strong to this very special ministry. We have purpose! We have the ability to reach people that no one else can reach.
If you have been called to this very special ministry, God has seen you as strong enough to use it for His honor and glory. You will receive a blessing from Him that is reserved especially for you! It is God’s strength that feeds your strength. He will continually feed that strength when we ask Him too. Be sure that He does expect things from you even with a disability. He expects exactly what you are capable of doing.
I will be prayerfully moving forward in the new year with a project designed for people with disabilities. A project that involves crafting and creating in the ways we can. Will you pray for this project? Remember that God has a specific plan for you or your loved ones with disabilities. We have been hand picked for His specific plan.
